During a Reflexology treatment, specific finger and thumb pressure techniques are applied to reflex points on the feet (and sometimes the hands), based on the theory that these areas correspond to all parts of the body, including major organs.
Reflexology is similar to Acupuncture in that the treatment works on certain energy points to balance the energy of the body. The main theory is that the body is divided into ten reflex zones. Imagine a line drawn through the main centre of the body with five zones on either side, running the length of the body from head to toe.
Energy flows constantly along these zones or pathways and in case of blockages of the energy flow, imbalances can occur, which in turn can lead to health problems. Reflexology may assist in clearing up blockages, allowing energy to circulate freely to all parts of the body and assist in helping the body to rebalance.
Reflexology is thought to be beneficial for a wide variety of complaints from back pain to migraine to sleep disorders. However, it is particularly beneficial for stress related disorders, which can account for up to 75% of all illnesses.
Reflexology is a calm, soothing and relaxing therapy. It is not uncommon that people fall asleep while receiving a treatment.
